The Triumphant Song of Deborah & Barak |
Judges 5:1-31 The Book of Judges [in Smaller Chunks] |
Then, Deborah & Barak, [Abinoam’s] son, sang, on that day. [Judges 4:4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.] |
[They sang,] You, praise the Lord for avenging Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves. [2 Chronicles 17:16 And next [to] him was Amasiah, [Zichri’s] son, who willingly offered himself to the Lord & with him, 200,000 mighty men of valor.] |
Hear & [listen,] O you: kings & princes & I, even I, will sing to the Lord. I will sing praise to the Lord God of Israel. Lord, when You [went] out of Seir, & when You [marched] out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, & the: heavens & the clouds also dropped [rain.] |
[Psalm 68:7-9 O God, when You [went out] before Your people, when You [marched] through the wilderness; Selah. The earth shook, & the heaven also dropped [rain] at the presence of God. Even Sinai, itself, was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel. You, O God [sent] a plentiful rain, [by which] You [confirmed] Your inheritance, when it was weary.] |
The mountains & even [Mount Sinai] melted before the Lord God of Israel. [Exodus 19:18 And Mount Sinai was altogether [smoking,] because the Lord [came down] upon it in fire. And the smoke [of it went up, like] the smoke of a furnace & the whole mountain greatly quaked.] |
The highways [weren’t occupied, so] the travelers walked through [on the] byways in, [a.k.a. during,] the days of: Shamgar, [Anath’s] son. [Judges 3:30-31 so Moab was [defeated] that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest 80 years. And after him, was Shamgar, [Anath’s] son, [who killed] 600 men with an ox goad, [a.k.a. cow prod.] And he also delivered Israel.] |
[And] [during] the days of Jael. [Judges 4:22 And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him & said to him, Come & I will show you the man whom you seek. And when [Barak] came into her tent, [he saw] Sisera lay dead & the [tent] nail was in his temples.] |
The inhabitants of the villages, & Israel ceased [to thrive,] until I, Deborah, arose, as a mother in Israel. They chose new gods. Then, war was [within their] gates. Was there a shield or spear seen among [the] 40,000 in Israel? |
[Deuteronomy 32:17-18 They sacrificed to [demons,] not to God. To gods whom they [didn’t] know. To new gods that came up [recently,] whom your [forefathers didn’t] fear, [a.k.a. respect.] You [aren’t mindful] of the Rock [Who Fathered] you, & you have forgotten God, [Who] formed you.] |
My heart is [with] the governors of Israel, [who] willingly offered themselves among the people. You, bless the Lord. Judges 4:10 And Barak called Zebulun & Naphtali to Kedesh; & [Barak] went up with 10,000 at his feet; & Deborah went up with [Barak.] |
Speak [out,] you, [a.k.a. powerful, who] ride on white [donkeys,] & you, [who] sit in judgment, & [those powerless, who] walk by the [road.] [2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, [so] that everyone may receive the things done in His body, whether [it's] good or bad, according to [what] he [has] done.] |
[Those who] are delivered from the noise of [the] archers in the places [they] [draw] water, & they shall rehearse the righteous [actions, a.k.a. miracles,] of the Lord there. Even [the Lord’s] righteous [actions] toward the inhabitants of His villages in Israel. |
Then, the people of the Lord shall go down to the gates. Awake, Deborah, awake & utter a song. Arise, Barak & lead [yours in] captivity [held] captive, you son of Abinoam. Then, He made him [who remained] [to] have [control] over the nobles among the people. The Lord made me have [control] over the mighty. |
[From] a root of Ephraim, was against Amalek. After you, Benjamin, [was] among your people. Out of Machir, the governors, [a.k.a. rulers,] came down & out of Zebulun [those,] [a.k.a. scribes, who] handle the [writer’s] pen, [also came.] |
Even Issachar & [his] princes were with Deborah & also Barak, [who] was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben [had indecisive hearts,] there. Why [did] you [stay in safety] among the sheep [pens,] to hear the bleatings of the flocks? |
For there [was] great [indecision] [among] the divisions of Reuben. Gilead [stayed safely] beyond [the] Jordan [River,] & why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea shore & [stayed] in his breaches. |
Zebulun & Naphtali were [the] people [who jeopardized] their [own] lives to the [point of] death, [on] the high places of the [battlefields.] The kings came & fought, & then fought [Canaanite’s] kings in Taanach by the waters of Migiddo, & they [gained no plunder.] |
They fought from heaven. The stars [in their orbits] fought against Sisera. The ancient River of Kishon swept them away. O my soul, you [have trampled] down, [what had previously been,] strength. |
[Judges 4:7 And I will draw you to the River Kishon, & I will deliver: Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots & his multitude, into your [hands.] |
Then, the [horse’s hooves] were broken [from the continued hard galloping by] the mighty ones [of Sisera.] The Angel of the Lord said, Bitterly curse you Meroz, & [their] inhabitants [of it,] because they [didn’t come] to the help of the Lord against the mighty. |
Jael, the wife of Heber, the Kenite, shall be blessed above [all] women. She shall be blessed above [all] women in [a] tent. [Sisera] asked [her for] water, & she gave him milk. [Jael] brought [out] butter in a lordly dish. |
[When Sisera was asleep,] she put [a tent nail in] her hand, & a workmen’s hammer [in] her right hand. And [Jael struck through Sisera’s] head, when she had pierced & [struck] through his temples. At her feet, [Sisera] bowed, fell & lay down dead there, at [Jael's] feet. |
The mother of Sisera looked out a window, [crying,] through the lattice, Why is his chariot [taking] so long in coming [here?] Why [do its] chariot wheels [delay?] Her [wisest] ladies answered her, & she returned [an] answer to herself. |
Haven’t they [hurried?] Haven’t they divided the [plunder &] to every man a damsel or 2, & to Sisera [plunder] of [various colors; plunder] of [various colors] of needlework; [along with] [various colors] of needlework on both sides, [well suited] for the necks [of those who] take the [plunder?] |
O Lord, let all Your enemies perish [like this,] but let [those who] love You, be [like] the sun when [it goes out] in [its] might, [a.k.a. strength.] And the land had rest, [a.k.a. peace, for] 40 years. |
