The Lord Talks to Job About the Leviathan |
Job 41:1-34 Book of Job [in Smaller Chunks] |
Can you draw out [the] Leviathan with a hook? Or [catch] his tongue with a cord, which you let down? Can you put a hook into his nose? Or bore through his jaw with a thorn? Will he make many [requests of] you? Will he speak soft, [pleasant] words to you? Will he make a covenant [contract] with you? |
Will you take him [like] a servant forever? Will you play with him, [like] with a bird? Or will you [tie him up] for your maidens? Shall [your friends] make a banquet of him? Shall they [divide his meat from] him among the merchants? |
Can you fill his skin with barbed [iron harpoons?] Or [fill] his head with [fishing] spears? Lay your hand upon him & remember [how he battles against you] & do [it] no more. [Look,] the hope of [catching Leviathan] is [worthless.] |
[Wouldn't someone] be [thrown] down at the [very] sight of [Leviathan?] [No one] is so fierce to dare [wake] him up. Who then is able to stand before Me? Who has [preceded] Me, that I should repay him? [Whatever] is under the whole heaven is Mine. |
I won't conceal [Leviathan's] parts, nor his power, nor his [beautiful proportions.] Who can [find the front of his hide, he wears like a] garment? Or who can come to him with [a] double bridle? Who can open [his mouth, like the] doors of his face? His teeth are [terrifying all around.] |
His scales are his pride, shut up [close] together [like with a seal that closes.] One is so [close] to another, that no air can come between them. They are joined one to another & they stick together, [so] that they can't be [separated.] |
[During Leviathan's sneezing,] a light [shines out.] And his eyes [rise up] like the [sunrise] of the morning. [What looks like] burning lamps go out of [Leviathan's] mouth & sparks of fire leap out. Smoke goes out of his nostrils, [like steam goes] out of a [boiling] pot or caldron. His breath [starts] the coals [on fire] & a flame goes out of his mouth. |
His neck remains [his] strength & sorrow is turned into joy before him. The [scales] of his [skin] are joined together. They, themselves are firm & can't be moved. His heart is [hard like a rock.] [Yes] as hard [like] a piece of the [lower] millstone [for grinding grain.] |
When [Leviathan] raises himself up, the mighty are afraid, [because of the waves] [breaking,] they [cleanse] themselves. [He] who lays a sword, [a] spear, a dart, or a [javelin] at [Leviathan] cannot hold [it.] He [regards] iron [like it was] straw & brass [like] rotten wood. |
[Arrows] can't make [Leviathan] flee. [And rocks from slings] are turned into stubble [by] him. Darts are [considered like] stubble & [Leviathan] laughs at the shaking of a spear. |
Sharp [rocks] are under [Leviathan, but he is unharmed.] He spreads [the] sharp, pointed [scales] upon the [deep, muddy waters.] He makes the deep [waters to bubble, like a boiling] pot. He makes the sea [ooze] like a pot of ointment, [leaving] a path to shine after him. |
[Someone] would think the deep [waters' waves had white hair.] [There is nothing similar] to him upon all the earth, who is made without fear. [Leviathan sees] all the high things & he is the king over all the children of pride. |
