Isaac’s Blessings as He Nears Death |
Genesis 27:1-41 The First Book of Moses Called Genesis |
When Isaac was old, his eyes were [so] dim, it [happened] that he couldn’t see & he called his eldest son, Esau, & [told] him, My son, & [Esau] said, Here I am. And [Isaac] said, [See,] I am old & I [don’t] know when my death. Therefore, I now pray [that] you take your weapons & quiver & go out to the field & [hunt] some venison & make me savory meat, [like] I love & bring it to me, [so] that I may eat [it] & that my soul shall bless you, before I die. |
And Rebekah [spoke] to her son, Jacob, saying, [See,] I hear your father speak to Esau, your brother, saying, Bring me venison & make me me savory meat , [so] that I may eat [it] & bless you [in front of] the Lord, before my death. Therefore, go now my son & obey my voice according to [what] I command you. Go now to the flock & get me 2 good [kid goats from there] & I will make them savory meat for your father, [just like] he loves. And you shall bring it to your father, [so] that he may bless you before his death. |
And Jacob said to Rebekah, his mother, [Look, Esau, my brother, is a hairy man & [I'm not.] [Perhaps, my father will feel me & I will seem to him [like I'm deceitful] & I shall bring a curse upon me & not a blessing. His mother said to [Jacob,] Let your curse be on me, my son. Only obey my voice & go & get them [for] me. [After Jacob brought] them to his mother, she made the savory meat, such as his father loved. |
Rebekah took the [best clothing] of her eldest son, Esau, [that] were in the house with her & put them on Jacob, her younger son, [along with the skin] of the [kid] goats on [Jacob’s] hands & the smooth [part] of his neck. She gave the savory meat & the bread she had prepared, into the hand of her son, Jacob. |
And [Jacob] came to his father & said, My father: and [his father [asked,] Here I am, who are you, my son? And Jacob said, I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done according [to what] you [bid] me [to do.] I pray [that] you, sit [up] & eat of my venison, [so] that your soul may bless me. Isaac [asked him,] How did you find it so quickly, my son? [Jacob] said, Because the Lord your God brought it to me. |
Isaac said to Jacob, Come near, I pray [that] I may feel you, [to see if] you are [really] my son, Esau, or not. Jacob went near to his father, [who] felt him & said, The voice is Jacob’s, but the hands are the hands of Esau. [Isaac didn’t recognize] him, because his hands were hairy [like] Esau’s hands, so [Isaac] blessed [Jacob]. Then, [Isaac asked him,] Are you [really] my son, Esau? [Jacob] said, I am. |
[Isaac asked him,] Bring it near me & I will eat of my son's venison, [so that my soul may bless you. his savory venison to him to eat, [so] that my soul may bless you. [Jacob came near] & brought him [the food] & he [ate it.] And [Jacob] brought him the wine to drink & [Isaac] drank [it.] Isaac said to him, Come near, now & kiss me, my son. [Jacob] came near & kissed him & [Isaac] could smell [Esau’s scent on[ his [clothing] & blessed him & said, See, of the scent of my son is [like] the [scent] of a field, which the Lord had blessed. |
Therefore, [may] God give you of the dew of heaven & the fatness of the earth & plenty of corn & wine. Let people & nations serve you & bow down to you. Be [master] over your brethren & let your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you & blessed be everyone who blesses you! |
It [happened,] as soon as Isaac [finished] blessing Jacob & Jacob [was barely] was gone from the presence of Isaac, his father, [that] Esau, his brother, came in from hunting & made savory meat & brought it to his father & said, Let my father arise & eat of his son’s venison, [so] that your soul may bless me. When Isaac, his father, asked, Who are you? He replied, I am your firstborn son, Esau. |
Isaac [was trembling] & asked, Who? Where is he [who] had taken venison & brought it to me & I [ate it] all & blessed him before you came? [Yet,] he shall be blessed. Esau cried [bitterly] when he heard his father’s words & [begged] his father, Bless me, also, O my father. [Isaac] said, Your brother came with [deceitfully] & has taken away your blessing. [Esau] said, Isn't he rightly named Jacob, because he has taken away both my birthright & [now] he has taken away my blessing! |
[Esau asked] his father, [Don't] you have reserved a blessing for me? Isaac said to Esau, [Look,] I have [already] made Isaac your master & have given all his brethren to him as servants & [blessed] him with corn & wine to sustain him. What shall I do now [for] you, my son? Esau [asked Isaac,] Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, also, O my father & Esau lifted up his voice & wept. |
Isaac answered & said to Esau, Behold, your dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth & dew from the heaven above. You shall live by your sword & you shall serve your brother. It shall come to pass when you have dominion, that you will break [Jacob’s] yoke from off your neck. Esau hated Jacob for the blessing his father [had given] him.] |
[Esau planned] in his heart, I will [kill] Jacob, my brother, when the days of mourning for my father, Isaac, were at hand. Rebekah was told these words of [Esau’s plan] & called for Jacob, her younger son & [told him, Look,] your brother, Esau, [is comforting] himself [by planning] to kill you. Therefore, now, my son, obey my voice & arise & flee to Laban, my brother, in Haran & [stay] with him a few days until [Esau’s] fury turns away & he forgets what you have done to him. |
Then I will send [for] you from [there.] Why should I be deprived of both [of] you in one day? Rebekah [told] Isaac, I am [worried to death], because of the daughters of Heth [Esau married] & if Jacob [selects] a wife from the daughters of Heth, [like] these, which are the daughters of the land, what good would my life [be] to me? |
