Moses Explains Why the Previous Generation Didn’t Enter the Promised Land |
Deuteronomy 1:1-46 Deuteronomy the Fifth Book of Moses |
These [are] the words [that] Moses [spoke] to all [of] Israel on [the east side of the] Jordan [River,] in the wilderness, in the plain [desert opposite] the Red Sea, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth & Dizahab. |
([It is an] 11 day journey from Horeb, by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.) [It happened on] the 1st day of the 11th month in the 40th year, that Moses [spoke] to the children [people] of Israel, according to all the Lord [commanded him to say to] them. |
After [Moses] had [defeated] Sihon, the [Amorite’s] king, [who lived] in Heshbon & Og, [Bashan’s] king, [who lived] in Astaroth [a.k.a. Ashtaroth] in Edrei. On this side of [the] Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying, The Lord our God [spoke] to us in Horeb, saying, You have [stayed] long enough in this [mountain.] |
Turn & take your journey & go to the [hill country] of the Amorites & to all the places [near it,] in the plain, the hills, the [valleys,] in the south & by the [seacoast,] to the land of Canaan & to Lebanon, to the great Euphrates River. |
[Look,] I have [put] the land before you. Go in & possess the land [that] the Lord [swore] to your [forefathers,] Abraham, Isaac & Jacob, to give to them & their [descendants] after them. |
At that time, I [said] to you, I am not able to bear [the burden of you by] myself. The Lord your God [has] multiplied you & [look] you are this day [like] the multitude of stars [in] heaven. |
(The Lord God of your [forefathers made] you 1,000 times [as] many as you [were] & [blessed] you, as [God] had promised you!) How can I bear your [problems,] your burden & your [complaints.] |
Take wise men, [with] understanding & [are well] known among your tribes [for you] & I will make them [leaders] over you. You answered me & said, The thing you have said is good for us to do. |
So, I took the chief of your tribes, wise men & [well] known & made them [leaders] over you, captains over 1,000’s, captains over 100’s, captains over 50’s & captains over 10’s & officers among your tribes. |
At that time, I charged your judges, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren & judge [fairly] between every man & his brother & the stranger [who] is with him. You shall not [show partiality] to the persons [judged]; but [you] shall hear [both] the [powerless]l, as well as the [powerful equally.] |
[Do not be intimidated by anyone]; for the judgment is God’s. [If the] cause is too hard for you, bring it to me & I will hear it. At that time, I commanded you all the things you should do. |
When we departed from Horeb, we went through all the [big] & terrible wilderness [that] you saw on the [road] of the mountain of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. |
We came to Kadesh Barnea, I said to you, You [have come] to the mountain of the Amorites, [that] the Lord our God [is giving] to us. [See,] the Lord your God [has put] the land before you. Go up & possess it, as the Lord God of your [forefathers] said to you, [Don’t be afraid, or] discouraged. |
Everyone of you came near to me & said, Before we go, we will send men [to examine] the land & bring us word again, [about the] way we must go up & the cities we shall come [to.] |
[I was] pleased [with this] & I took 12 men [from] you, 1 [from every] tribe. They turned & went into the mountain & came to the Valley of Eshcol & [examined] it. They took [some] of the fruit of the land in their hands, & brought it down to us. |
They brought us word again & said, The Lord our God [has] given us good land, [still] we wouldn’t go up, but [you] rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God. |
You [complained] in your tents & said, The Lord has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the [hands] of the Amorites, to destroy us, because He [hates] us. [Why] shall we go up? |
Our brethren have discouraged our [hearts,] saying, [There are many] people & [they are] taller than [us.] The cities are [big] & walled up to heaven. [Additionally,], we have seen the Anakims [a.k.a. giants] there. Then, I said to you, [Don’t be apprehensive or] afraid of them. |
The Lord your God [Who goes] before you, shall fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt, before your eyes. And in the wilderness, where you [saw] how the Lord your God [carried] you in all the [ways] that you went, until you came into this place, [like] a man [carries] his son. |
[Still] you didn’t believe the Lord your God [about] this. [The Lord God,] Who went before you, to [find] you a place to pitch your tents. [God was] in [the] fire at night & the cloud by day to show you [which] way you should go. |
The Lord heard your voice & words & was [furious] & [swore an oath,] saying, Surely, not 1 of these men [from] this evil generation [shall] see the good land [that] I [swore] to give to your [forefathers.] |
[Except] for Caleb, [Jephunneh’s] son, [who] shall see it. I will give to him & [his descendants] the land that he [walked on while examining the land,] because he [totally] followed the Lord. |
Also, the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, saying, You shall not go in [there.] But Joshua, [Nun’s] son, [who] stands before you, shall go in [there.] Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. |
[Additionally, the] little ones you said [would] be prey & your [young] children, may go in there [who] had no between good & evil, shall go in [there.] I will give it to them & they shall possess it. |
As for you, turn around [now] & journey into the wilderness by way of the Red Sea. Then, you answered & said to me, We have sinned against the Lord. We will go up & fight, according to all the Lord our God commanded us. |
When every man had [strapped] on his weapons of war, you were ready to go up the hill. The Lord said to me, [Tell] them, [Don’t] go up & [don’t] fight, for I am not among you; lest you be [defeated] before your enemies. |
So, I [spoke] to you & you [wouldn’t listen,] but [you] rebelled against the [Lord’s command.] [You arrogantly went] up into the hill. The Amorites, [who live] in that mountain, came out against you & chased you, like bees do. |
[They] destroyed you [from] Seir, even to Hormah. You returned & wept before the Lord, but the Lord wouldn’t [listen] to your voice, nor [lend His] ear to you. So, you [stayed] in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you [remained] there. |
