Hidden 6 Years, Joash is Made the King |
2 Chronicles 23:1-21 2 Chronicles in [Smaller Chunks] |
In the 7th year, Jehoiada, [the priest,] strengthened himself & made a covenant [contract] with: the captains of 100’s; Azariah, [Jeroham’s] son; Ishmael, [Jehohanan’s] son; Azariah, [Obed’s] son; Maaseiah, [Adaiah’s] son & Elishaphat, [Zichri’s] son. |
And they went & gathered the Levites [throughout] all the cities of Judah & the [heads of the families] of Israel & came to Jerusalem. All the congregation made a covenant [contract] with the [rightful] king in the house of God. |
And [Jehoiada, the priest] said to them, [Look,] the king’s son shall [rule, like] the Lord has said of the sons of David. You shall do this: 1/3 of the priests & Levites shall [keep watch] at the doors at the [entrance] on [the] Sabbath. |
And 1/3 shall be at the king’s [palace] & 1/3 at the Foundation Gate. And all the [other] people shall be in the [courtyards of the Lord’s] house. But [don’t] let [anyone] come into the [Lord’s] house [except for] the priests & the Levites, [who] minister. |
They shall go in, for they are holy, but all the [other] people shall keep the watch of the Lord. And the Levites shall [surround around] king, [Joash,] every man with his weapons in his hand. |
[If anyone] else comes into the [Lord’s] house, he shall be put to death, but [stay] with king [Joash,] when he comes in & when he goes out. So, the Levites & all [of] Judah did according to all the things that Jehoiada, the priest, had commanded. |
Each [captain] took his men [who] were [going on duty] on the Sabbath & [those who] were [going off duty] on the Sabbath: for Jehoiada, the priest, [didn’t dismiss any of] the [divisions.] |
[Also,] Jehoiada, the priest delivered to the captains: 100’s of spears & [small & large] shields that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God. |
And [Jehoiada positioned] all the people [with their weapons] in hand, from the right side of the temple to the left side & along the altar & the temple & [surrounding around king Joash.] |
Then, [Jehoiada & his sons] brought out the king’s son & put the crown upon [Joash] & gave him the Testimony & made him king. And Jehoiada & his sons anointed [Joash] & said [loudly,] God save the king. |
Now, when [Queen] Athaliah heard the noise of the people running & praising the king, she came into the [Lord’s] house, to the people. And she looked & [saw] the king stood [by] his pillar at the [entrance] & the [officers & trumpeters were] by the king. |
And all the people of the land rejoiced & sounded with trumpets. Also the singers with [those who played musical] instruments & the [song leaders, who] taught [how] to sing praise. |
Then, Athaliah, [tore] her clothes & said, Treason, Treason. Then, Jehoiada, the priest, brought out the captains of 100’s, [who] were [put in charge] over the [army] & said to them, [Take her outside away from the Lord’s house & whoever] follows her, [is to be killed by] the sword. |
For the priest said, [Don’t kill] her in the [Lord’s] house. So, they [seized] her, when she [had] come to the [entrance] of the Horse Gate, by the king’s [palace] & they [killed] her there. And Jehoiada, the priest, made a covenant [contract] between him & between all the people & the king, that they should be the Lord’s people. |
Then, all the people went to the house of Baal & [broke] it down & [broke] down his altars & his images [into] pieces & [killed Baal’s] priest, Mattan, [in front of] the altars. |
[Jeremiah 21:9 Then, they shall answer, Because they have [abandoned] the Covenant [contract] of the Lord, their God & worshiped other gods & served them.] |
Also, Jehoiada appointed the offices of the [Lord’s] house [into the hands] of the priests, the Levites, whom David had [assigned some] to offer the burnt offerings of the Lord, with [those] singing & rejoicing, as it is written in the Law of Moses [as ordered] by David. |
And [Jehoiada put the gatekeepers] at the gates of the Lord’s] house, [so] that none, which [were] unclean in anything [could] enter in. |
And [Jehoiada] took the captains of 100’s, the nobles & governors, [a.k.a. rulers] of the people & all the people of the land & brought down king [Joash] from the [Lord’s] house & they came through the high gate into the king’s [palace] & set the king upon the throne of the kingdom. |
And all the people of the land rejoiced. And the city [had peace] after [Queen] Athaliah [was killed] with the sword. |
