Adonijah’s Request to Marry Abishag |
1 Kings 2:1-46 1 Kings [in Smaller Chunks] |
The [day] now drew [near] that [king] David should die; & he [commanded] his son, Solomon, saying, I [am] the way of all [those on] the earth, [a.k.a. die.] Therefore, you, be strong & [demonstrate] yourself [as] a man. |
And keep the [commands] of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His: [mandates,] commandments, judgments, & His testimonies, [like] it is written in the Law of Moses, [so] you [may] prosper in all that you [do, wherever] you [go.] |
[So] that the Lord may continue His Word [that] He [spoke about] me, saying, If your children [pay attention] to their [ways, a.k.a. actions,] & walk before Me in truth with: all their heart, & all their soul, (He said,) There shall not fail you [to be] a man on the throne of Israel. |
[Additionally,] you also [know] what Joab, [Zeruiah’s] son, did to me, & what he did to the 2 captains of the [army] of Israel, to: Abner, [Ner’s] son, & Amasa, [Jether’s] son, whom he [killed,] & shed the blood of war in peace [time.] |
And [Joab] put the blood of war on his [belt] that was [around] his [waist,] & in his shoes that were on his feet. Therefore, do according to your wisdom, & [don’t] let his [gray] head go down to the grave in peace. |
But [display] kindness to the sons of Barzillai, the Gileadite, & let them eat at your table, for they came to me, when I fled, because of Absalom, your brother. [2 Samuel 19:32-35 Now, Barzillai, was a very [old] man, even 80 years old, & he provided the king [food & supplies,] while he lay at Mahanaim; for [Barzillai] was a very great man. And the king said to Barzillai, You come over with me, & I will feed you with me in Jerusalem. And Barzillai said to the king, How long shall I have to live, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? This day, I am 80 years old; & can I [distinguish] between good, & [bad?] Can [I,] your servant, taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear anymore the [voices] of: singing men & women? Why then, should [I,] your servant [still] be a burden to my lord, the king?] |
And [look,] you [have] with you, Shimei, [Gera’s] son, a Benjamite [from] Bahurim, [who] cursed me [terribly on] the day when I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at [the] Jordan [River,] & I [swore] to him by the Lord, saying, I won’t put you to death with the sword. Therefore, [don’t] hold him guiltless. |
For you [are] a wise man, & [know] what you [ought] to do to him, but, you, bring his [gray] head down to the grave with blood. So, David [ slept with his [forefathers, a.k.a. died,] & was buried in the city of David. |
And [king] David [ruled] over Israel [for] 40 years: 7 years he [ruled] in Hebron, & 33 years he [ruled] in Jerusalem. Then, Solomon, sat upon the throne of David, his father; & his kingdom was established [magnificently.] |
And Adonijah, [Solomon’s half brother born to] Haggith, came to BathSheba, [Solomon’s] mother. And [BathSheba asked [Did] you [come peacefully?] He said, [Peacefully.] He [also] said, I have [something] to say to you. |
[BathSheba] said, [Continue speaking.] [Adonijah] said, You [know] that the kingdom was mine, & all Israel [had looked to] me, that I should [rule.] [However] the kingdom [has] turned [around & has] become my brother’s: for it was his from the Lord. And now I ask 1 petition, [a.k.a. favor,] of you. [Don’t] deny me. |
And [BathSheba] said, [Continue.] [Adonijah] said, I pray [that] you speak to king Solomon, (for he won’t say [no to] you,) [so] that he [will] give me Abishag, the Shunammite, to [marry.] And BathSheba said, Well; I will speak to the king for you. |
Therefore, BathSheba went to king Solomon, to speak to him for Adonijah. And the king, [stood] up to [greet] her, & bowed himself to her, & sat down on his throne. And [Solomon had] a seat to be [put] for the king’s mother; & she sat on his right hand [side.] |
Then, she said, I [want] 1 small [favor from] you. I pray [that] you [don’t] say [no to] me. And the king said, [Continue, my mother, for I won’t say [no to] you. She said, Let Abishag, the Shunammite, be given to Adonijah, your brother, to [marry.] |
And king Solomon answered his mother & said, Why do] you ask [for] Abishag, the Shunammite, for Adonijah? [Do] you also ask for him the kingdom, for he is [my] elder brother. [Does he] even [want] for [himself:] Abiathar, the priest, & Joab, [Zeruiah’s] son? |
Then, king Solomon [swore] by the Lord, saying, If Adonijah [hasn’t requested] this against his own life, God do so to me, & more also. Therefore, as the Lord [Lives, Who has] established me, & [put] me on my father, [David’s,] throne, & Who [has] made me a house, [like] He promised. |
Adonijah shall be put to death this day. And King Solomon sent [at] the hand of Benaiah, [Jehoiada’s] son; & he fell upon [Adonijah,] & he died. |
And king [Solomon] said to Abiathar, the priest, Get [yourself] to Anathoth, to your own fields; for you [are] worthy of death. But I won’t put you to death at this time, because you [carried] the Ark of the Lord God before my father, David, & because you [have suffered] in all [of which] my father was afflicted [with.] |
So, Solomon [forced] out Abiathar from being [a] priest to the Lord, [so] he might fulfill the Word of the Lord, [that] He [spoke about] the house of Eli in Shiloh. |
[1 Samuel 2:29-30 [For what reason,] [do] you kick, [a.k.a. rebel,] at [My] sacrifice & at [My] offering, [that] I have commanded in My habitation. And [you] [honor] your sons above Me, to make yourselves fat with the [best] of all the offerings of Israel, My people? [For this reason,] the Lord God of Israel [says,] I indeed said that your house, & the house of your father, should walk before Me forever. But now, the Lord [says,] Be it far from Me [to do this;] [because] I will [honor those, who honor] Me, & [those, who] despise Me, shall be lightly [thought of.] |
Then, [news] came to Joab, for Joab had turned [& followed] after Adonijah, [although he didn’t follow] after Absalom. And Joab fled into the tabernacle of the Lord, & [grabbed] hold [of] the horns [on] the altar. And king Solomon was told that Joab [had] fled into the tabernacle of the Lord & [see,] he is by the altar. |
Then, Solomon sent Benaiah, [Jehoiada’s] son, saying, Go, fall upon, [a.k.a. kill,] him. And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the Lord, & said to [Joab,] The king [says this,] Come [out.] And [Joab] said, [No,] but I will die here. |
And Benaniah [told] the king, saying, [This is what] Joab said, & answered me. And king [Solomon] said to [Benaiah,] Do as he [has] said, & [strike him down,] & bury him, [so] that you [may] take away from me, & from the house of my father, the innocent blood, [that] Joab shed. |
And the Lord shall return his blood upon [Joab’s] own head, who [struck down] with the sword, 2 men more righteous, & better than he [is.] My father, David, [didn’t know of it, specifically:] Abner, [Ner’s] son, captain of the [army] of Israel, & Amasa, [Jether’s] son, [the] captain of the [army] of Judah. |
Therefore, their blood shall [be] [returned] upon the head of Joab, & upon the [heads] of his seed, [a.k.a. descendants,] forever. But there shall be peace upon David, & his seed, [a.k.a. descendants,] his house, & his throne forever from the Lord. |
So, Benaiah, [Jehoida’s] son, went up, & [struck down Joab, & killed] him, & he was buried in his own house in the wilderness. And king [Solomon] put Benaiah, [Johoiada’s] son, in [Joab’s position] over the [army.] |
And [he] put Zadok, the priest, in [the position] of Abiathar. And king [Solomon] sent, & called for Shimei, & said to him, Build [yourself a] house in Jerusalem, & [live] there, [but] [don’t] go [out, anywhere from there.] |
For it shall be, [on] the day [that] you go out, & [cross] over the Brook Kidron, you [shall] know for certain that you shall surely die, & your blood shall be upon your own head. And Shimei said to the king, [This] saying is good, & [I] your servant, will do [like] my lord, the king, [has] said. |
And Shimei [lived] in Jerusalem [a long time.] And it [happened] at the end of 3 years, 2 of [Shimei’s] servants ran away to Achish, [Maachah’s] son, king of Gath. And Shimei [was] told, saying, [Look,] your servants [are] in Gath. And Shimei arose, & saddled his [mule,] & went to Gath to Achish to [find] his servants, & brought his servants [back] from Gath. |
And Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, & [had] come [back] again. And king [Solomon] sent for Shimei, & said to him, Didn’t I make you swear by the Lord, & [warned] you, saying, Know for certain, on the day that you go out, & [walk around anywhere] [else,] you [shall] surely die? |
And You [said] to me, The word I have heard is good. Why [haven’t] you then kept the oath of the Lord, & the [command] that I charged you with? The king [also] said to Shimei, You [know] all the wickedness, which [only] your heart [knows of,] that you [did] to David, my father. |
Therefore, the Lord shall return your wickedness upon your own head. And king Solomon shall be blessed, & the throne of David shall be established before the Lord forever. So, king [Solomon] commanded Benaiah, [Jehoiada’s] son, [who] went out, & [struck him down] & he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon. |
